Common
trade names are: Acetron - Sustarin - Dielux
Acetal
resins have high tensile strength, stiffness, resilience, fatigue
endurance and moderate toughness. Among thermoplastics, acetals
have high resistance to organic sol-vents, excellent dimensional
stability, a low coefficient of friction, and outstanding abrasion
resistance.
Also,
acetals absorb low amounts of moisture, and are resistant to a wide
range of solvents. Acetals are attacked by both strong acids and
oxidizing agents
There
are two types of acetals, the homopolymer (Delrin by Dupont) and
copolymer (Celcon by Hoechst Celanese and Ultraform by BASF). The
FDA has approved several grades of both types of acetal for food
contact applications.
